The following message contains the schedule, what to bring, costs, and a few frequently asked questions.

Tryouts:

Each tryout will last about 45-50 minutes where the players will be assessed on their ability to dribble, pass, shoot, and defend.  Each tryout will end with a scrimmage.  All of the players are encouraged to come to both days of tryouts.  All evaluation sessions will include evaluators independent of the Travel program and independent of the specific grade being evaluated.  Parents are NOT allowed to remain in the gym during the tryouts.

We ask that each player and parents arrive approximately 15 minutes before their tryout to complete registration and waivers.  We will also be registering as many players online as possible should they make their prospective team.  Uniforms will be on hand to size as many of the players the day of the tryouts as well.  Each player that makes their grade's team will be provided a jersey and shorts.

For tryouts the players will be assigned a bib number.  This is a number that the player is required to keep.  The players that make their grade's team will be posted on the Kaneland Basketball website by their bib number from tryouts. The players names will not appear, only the numbers for the boys who have been selected for the teams.

It is important that parents and players understand that the evaluators are looking for the players that will make up the best basketball teams and not just the tallest players, the fastest players, or the players that have the best shots. A successful and winning basketball team includes players that can rebound, play defense, pass the ball, shoot the ball and are willing to play within a team framework with a positive attitude.

Parents should encourage their sons to attempt to demonstrate all of their basketball skills during the tryouts. Players demonstrating abilities in all facets of the game and that demonstrate the ability and willingness to play as a member of a team, and not as an individual, will be more highly-rated in the evaluations than players concerned only with making as many shots as possible. Evaluations from prior year’s Travel coaches will also be taken into account in the selection of players.

Our games will begin after Nov 1st, 2017 for 4th-6th and after January 1, 2018 for 7th-8th and go through the middle of March.

A mandatory parent information meeting will be required at a time to be determined.

Philosophy:

The Travel program is designed to give boys with more advanced basketball skills the opportunity to play against stronger competition and play more games. Tryouts are open to boys that ATTEND in Kaneland 302 School District only.  Travel teams compete in tournaments that will be selected in advance by the Cagers Travel Director and Coaches. Tournaments are held on weekends and games are played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The program is run by both Kaneland Middle School and Kaneland High School coaches.

Teams:

Boys 4th-8th Grade

Coaches:

Kaneland Cagers Basketball conducts an interview process to determine available coaches for each team. Players are placed on teams before coaches are assigned. Every effort will be made to have coaches selected prior to the posting of the team selections. It is possible that at the conclusion of the tryouts a team may not have a coach. In that event, the parents of the players selected will be contacted seeking a volunteer to coach the team.

Exhibiting good sportsmanship and the development of players and their basketball skills are our primary points of emphasis.

Travel Team Fees:

The registration fee for Kaneland Cager Travel program is $375. (Fees may change based on School district gym costs)  No scholarships are offered for the travel program.  Payment is by credit card only and all fees must be paid in full prior to the first practice.

Parents and players should be aware that there are additional costs for participation in the Travel program that are the responsibility of the participants. The estimated additional costs could total approximately $150 - $350. These costs include admission fees for the tournaments, expenses of traveling to and from the tournaments and overnight lodging and food costs for various tournaments.

Included in the travel fee, each player will receive a team jersey and shorts.

Warm ups, shooting shirts, caps, duffle bags or any other sports apparel are additional costs at your own expense. These costs are not included in the fees paid to the Cagers.

Travel Practice and Tournaments:

It is expected that participation on a Travel team will be the player’s primary extra-curricular activity during the Travel season. Practices will start in November for the 4th and 6th Grade teams, and will begin in the middle of December for 7th and 8th Grade teams at the coach’s decision. The season concludes early March.  Dates TBD.

Schedules will be made available once they have been confirmed and are in place.
